About this event

Join us for a timely presentation by economist Marca Hagenstad on how the public and private sector are managing climate risk. As climate change impacts accelerate, understanding and managing climate risks have become a critical priority for both public and private sectors.

In this lunchtime session, we will explore the growing emphasis on climate risk assessments, focusing on recent developments such as California’s landmark ESG regulations, mandating corporate disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) final rule on climate disclosures (currently on hold) mandating that public companies report on climate-related risks, disclosing financial impacts of risks and how they are addressing climate change in their operations. The goal of standardized climate risk disclosures is to provide investors and other stakeholders with consistent and comparable climate-related information.

Though Colorado does not yet have statewide mandates for broad climate risk disclosures, the state continues to push for greater transparency through both legislative initiatives and voluntary frameworks, particularly for large emitters and businesses involved in state-funded projects. For example, in 2023 the Colorado General Assembly passed Senate Bill 23-016 mandating the Public Employees’ Retirement Association of Colorado (PERA) to publish information on climate-related risks in investments and operations beginning in 2025.

This session will highlight best practices, practical steps, and resources for organizations in Colorado—both public and private—to begin preparing for climate risk management and align their ESG efforts with emerging national and global standards.
